Physician Spotlight

Excellence in MedicineMorton Plant Mease Foundation presented their 2011 Excellence in Medicine Awards this past May at the Sheraton Sand Key Resort.  This annual recognition award began in 1988 when Morton Plant Hospital Foundation honored two physicians at its Annual Dinner.  The awards are now given to four physicians from each of the medical staffs - Morton Plant Hospital, Mease Hospitals and Morton Plant North Bay Hospital.

Dr. Jeffrey J. Sourbeer, MD, MBA, FAAFP, one of this year’s Excellence in Medicine recipients, is currently the Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency program at the Turley Family Health Center and Affiliate Assistant Professor for USF’s Department of Family Medicine.  He received his medical degree from Duke University and performed his Residency in Family Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Dr. Jeff SourbeerAfter graduating from medical school, Dr. Sourbeer joined his father in practice in Clearwater, Florida.  Later, they, along with six other community physicians, formed the group practice Morton Plant Mease Primary Care.  Dr. Sourbeer served as the group’s Medical Director and President and the group grew to more than 70 physicians in 35 locations in three counties.  During this time, Dr. Sourbeer also helped with the creation of the USF-MPM Family Medicine Residency.  Leadership being a hallmark of Dr. Sourbeer’s career, he has also served as past President of the Morton Plant Hospital medical staff and past Chair of the Department of Family Medicine at Morton Plant Hospital.

Dr. Sourbeer resides in Belleair with his wife who is a Pinellas County School Nurse and they have a son and daughter.  He enjoys camping, fishing, target shooting, travel and economic analysis.
